SINGAPORE: The National University of Singapore (NUS) has been ranked third among leading universities in Asia in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings (AUR).

NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan said: "We are pleased that NUS is recognised as one of the leading universities in Asia. To be consistently placed amongst the leading universities in the region and the world is testament to the significant contributions made by NUS faculty and researchers towards a high quality global education and cutting-edge research."

Commenting on the growing prominence of Asian universities, Professor Tan said: "The dramatic growth and vibrancy of Asia is attracting top students and scholars from around the world. The influx of global talents will further accelerate the stature and the standing of Asian universities."

Singapore's Nanyang Technological University was ranked 18th.

At the top is the University of Hong Kong, followed by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).

Ranked fourth is the Chinese University of Hong Kong, followed by the University of Tokyo, Seoul National University, Osaka University and Kyoto University. - CNA/de

Student life at New York University

Life at New York University is synonymous with life in New York City. It truly is a university in and of the city.

Situated in Greenwich Village, NYU students have access to all of what the city has to offer museums, sporting events, concerts, and the best restaurants.

As a first year student, I was confronted with the impossibility of taking full advantage of everything within the university and the city. The "bubble" that seems to exist at most other colleges does not exist at NYU where there is no traditional campus and student life is city life. The dorms are spread about downtown Manhattan. My first year dorm is situated at 3rd Avenue just south of Union Square. You walk to class alongside professionals going to work, artists, restaurateurs, etc. The school is so large (20,000 undergrad and 20,000 grad) it is hard to tell who are the students and who just lives in the neighborhood. As a student about to end my first year at NYU, I was met with a lot of surprises. I was not expecting it to be difficult to make friends, for I consider myself a somewhat likeable person. But, it's hard. Because NYU is so big and so spread out, it is up to the student to put herself "out there" and keep making an effort to get involved. There is not much social structuring or prodding that take place at other smaller schools (like I hear from my friends at Cornell and Northwestern) so a student has to be assertive in meeting people and getting out. And it is hard to do that because in the beginning of the year I could meet someone and then never see them again. It can be overwhelming and exhausting, but once I had made a few friends we hung out regularly and NYU's massiveness became less daunting.

As for academics, I could not be happier. Some of the core classes are large as are your standard lecture courses, but my other classes in languages and writing have been very small and run by engaging, brilliant professors. I plan to major in Spanish and I am looking forward to studying in Buenos Aires, Argentina next year, one of NYU's nine study abroad sites. Again, because NYU is such a big school, the student has to look out for himself. You have an advisor, but your advisor has many other students, and no one is going to be checking up on you to make sure you are doing what you need to do. You have to know what you want and be assertive in getting what you want. I know I had to call the Spanish department several times to make sure I could declare my major. In light of the dozens

The best value in public universities can be a very controversial and touchy subject. This is because there are public universities all around the world and each country would like to consider at least one of theirs as the best. Also the best can vary depending upon what you are studying and what you define as the best.

Best can mean did they get the most knowledge imparted for the field in which they studied? Does it mean that they went to the best public university for looking after its students, with good health and a low drop out rate? The best public university could be the university that has the best rate of success at finding jobs for its graduates. All of these, and numerous other factors could be what makes any university "the best", public or private! Let us look at a few of the best in England and the United States.

In England, two of the best Public Universities would be between Cambridge and Oxford, then you can throw in Imperial and a few others. All three universities are very particular in who they accept, but once accepted the Universities work hard to make sure the students do well. They help with tuition, have free teas to offset food expense and social events to encourage interests outside of studies. A degree form any of these places will almost assure one of a good, well paying position. What is good is that every graduate would claim they went to the best. This means that they got what they considered the best!

The United States has hundreds of public universities, many more that in England, and they are varied and diverse, it makes it almost impossible to choose the best. If you check on the Internet, you will get millions of suggested websites, over 165 million! There are various rating systems and they use a wide selection of criteria. My son used the Princeton Review board and chose Clemson University for his studies. It had high student satisfaction, high ratings in science (he wanted Physics) and high graduate job rate, that made it the best value for him! So far, he is extremely happy there!

Choosing the best is always controversial, and value in public universities is no different. Look them all over as closely as you can and then determine what is the best value for you!

The University of New Haven is a small, private school located in West Haven., CT. UNH, as it is commonly referred to, has an enrollment of about 3,200 full-time undergraduate students, 500 part-time undergraduate students, and about 1,800 part-time graduate students. The student population is spilt 50/50 males and females, which shows how much this school has evolved over the years. If you're into athletics, UNH offers 18 varsity sports, nine men's and nine women's, which compete in NCAA Division II athletics. In addition, they also offer numerous intramural sports where any student can participate.

The campus is nestled on a hill just minutes outside of downtown New Haven, and was once part of Yale University. In 1920, the University of New Haven spilt from Yale to form their own school. For many years, UNH was known as a commuter school with very few on-campus residents. However, over the years this has changed and the school is constantly expanding.

If you're looking for a small, intimate classroom setting then the University of New Haven might be for you. The average class size is between 25-30 students depending on your major, and 95% of the classrooms are equipped with smart technology. This gives the students and professors the opportunity to form a relationship that could not otherwise be done at a larger university.
